6m Roofing Sheets Prices in South Africa: IBR vs Corrugated

A 6 metre sheet costs what it costs. The reason two quotes for the same roof come in hundreds apart is almost never the sheet price. It’s the thickness, the coating spec, and whether the person quoting counted laps properly.

Here’s what a 6m sheet runs in 2026, why the number moves, and how to work out how many you need before you order.

6m roofing sheet prices in 2026

Roof sheeting is priced per linear metre, and a 6m sheet is six times that figure plus the cut. The ranges below are typical 2026 retail for 6m sheets, excluding VAT. Thickness and coating are doing most of the work here.

Profile and spec6m sheet price rangeWhere it suits
Corrugated, 0.4mm, galvanisedR850 to R1,150Carports, sheds, non-critical cover
Corrugated, 0.5mm, galvanisedR1,050 to R1,400Domestic outbuildings, light industrial
IBR, 0.47mm, galvanisedR1,150 to R1,500Standard domestic roof, 686mm cover
IBR, 0.53mm, galvanisedR1,350 to R1,750Longer spans, fewer purlins needed
IBR, 0.53mm, colour coatedR1,650 to R2,200Visible roofs, residential, colour matching
IBR, 0.58mm, colour coatedR1,900 to R2,600Large spans, low-pitch roofs, exposed sites

Prices are indicative, they move with the steel price and with stock, and the branch you buy from can differ by a few percent on the same profile. Check current pricing before you commit a budget to a client.

What actually moves the price per sheet

  • Thickness. 0.47mm to 0.58mm doesn’t sound like much. It’s a 23% jump in steel, and steel is the bulk of the cost. Thicker sheet also spans further, so it can cut your purlin count.
  • Coating. Bare galvanised is the cheapest. A Zincalume or aluminium-zinc coating adds corrosion life. A colour coat adds a paint line and a colour range on top of that.
  • Zinc coating weight. Two sheets at the same thickness can carry different coating masses, and the lighter one will rust first in a coastal or high-rainfall area. That’s the specification nobody reads until the rust appears.
  • Profile. IBR has a deeper rib and a 686mm effective cover. Corrugated has a 762mm cover but a shallower profile, and it needs more support at the same thickness.
  • Length. A 6m sheet is a compromise between fewer laps and handling weight. Longer sheets mean fewer overlaps and fewer leak points, and they’re harder to get onto a roof and onto a bakkie.

Working out how many 6m sheets you need

Effective cover is the number that matters, not the width of the sheet. IBR gives you 686mm of cover per sheet. Corrugated gives you 762mm. The overlapping rib isn’t roof, so it doesn’t count.

A single-slope 6m long run at a 15 degree pitch, 4m down the slope, needs about six IBR sheets across. That’s 4,000mm covered by 686mm of effective cover per sheet, rounded up. Order six, keep the seventh for the cut edge if there’s a gable.

Then add the laps. A 4m slope with a 6m sheet means one sheet runs the whole slope, no end laps at all, and that’s the whole argument for buying 6m lengths. Every end lap is 150mm to 200mm of wasted sheet and one more place water can get in.

Don’t forget the trims. Ridge capping, barge boards, flashings and valley gutters all price separately, and they’re usually 10% to 15% of the sheeting bill. Fixings are the other line item. You need roughly six screws per square metre, with washered fasteners matched to the profile, and they should be driven into the crest, not the pan.

Current profile prices and available lengths sit on the roofing materials category, which is worth a look before you lock in a sheet count.

IBR or corrugated

Both work. The choice comes down to pitch, span and budget.

IBR handles a lower pitch. The taller rib means water moves off faster and the sheet is stiffer, so it spans further between purlins. If your roof is under 15 degrees, IBR is the safer default and most Gauteng residential work uses it.

Corrugated is cheaper per square metre and it’s a traditional look, which matters on older properties where the roofline is part of the character. It needs a steeper pitch to shed water properly and more support at the same thickness. On a carport or a garden shed with a decent slope, corrugated does the job for less.

Getting 6m sheets to site

This is where 6m sheets bite. A 6m length doesn’t fit on a standard bakkie without overhanging, and overhanging sheeting bends, crimps, and scratches its own coating on the tailgate. If the sheets arrive kinked, they’re not going on the roof.

Either collect with a trailer long enough to carry them supported at both ends, or get them delivered. Our Wynberg branch in Sandton delivers roofing across Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand and the northern suburbs, and the driver will need to know whether the sheets are going up on the roof straight away or being stacked on the ground. Stacked properly, with timber strips between sheets and a cover on top, they’ll be fine. Stacked on bare ground with the plastic flapping, the edges rust first.

Buying on the right basis

Roofing is a quantity buy. One sheet at a time is expensive and slow, and a full roof’s worth of sheeting, trims and fixings in one order is where the price improves. If you’re roofing more than one unit, ask about our wholesale pricing before you order the first batch.

The full building and construction range covers sheeting, purlins, trims and fasteners, so one order can carry the whole roof. Everything we stock sits in the full product range if you want to check profiles and lengths before you order.

If you’d rather have someone work out the sheet count and the purlin spacing from your plan, bring it in or send it through the contact page. Getting the count right before you order is cheaper than a second delivery. New to Build Africa SA? Everything starts at our home page.

Roofing is structural, so don’t guess at spacing. A sheet that’s adequate on paper can still fail if the purlin spacing doesn’t match the profile and the wind loading for your area. Our guide to steel and rebar prices covers the structural steel side of the same job.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 6m roofing sheet cost in South Africa?

A 6m IBR sheet in 0.47mm galvanised runs roughly R1,150 to R1,500 in 2026. Corrugated in 0.4mm starts around R850 to R1,150, and colour coated 0.53mm IBR sits between R1,650 and R2,200. Prices exclude VAT and vary by branch.

Is IBR or corrugated roofing cheaper?

Corrugated is cheaper per square metre at the same thickness. IBR costs more but spans further, handles a lower pitch and needs fewer purlins, so on a shallow-pitch roof the installed cost can come out similar.

How many 6m sheets do I need for my roof?

Divide the roof width by the effective cover, which is 686mm for IBR and 762mm for corrugated, then round up. A 4m wide run needs about six IBR sheets. Add trims and about six screws per square metre.

What thickness roofing sheet should I buy?

0.47mm is the common domestic minimum for IBR. Go to 0.53mm or 0.58mm where spans are longer, the pitch is low, or the site is exposed to wind. Thicker sheet also reduces the number of purlins you need.

How long do galvanised roof sheets last in South Africa?

A properly coated sheet on a ventilated roof lasts decades inland. Life drops sharply near the coast, where salt air eats light coatings. Coastal installations should use a heavier aluminium-zinc or colour coated specification.

Can I collect 6m roofing sheets myself?

Only with a trailer or vehicle that supports them at both ends. A bakkie with the sheets overhanging will let them bend and crimp, and a kinked sheet can’t be laid straight. Delivery is usually the simpler option for a full roof.

We’ve spent more than a decade putting cement, sand, bricks, roofing sheets, reinforcing steel, tiles, sanitaryware and tools onto site, and quoting delivery runs across Wynberg, Sandton, Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand and the northern suburbs.

Between us we’ve priced a single bag of cement and a full house slab, answered the same sand question a thousand times, and watched which shortcuts come back as call-backs. Everything on this page comes from counter and delivery experience, not from a supplier brochure.
